Winching across South Africa

The holiday time for our Dutch friends has expired and there is only our tent below the Collesbersk mountain. Yesterday Víťa found another desolate airport from the air. According to air photos it looks hopefully. But whoa! The entrance is totally wired and there land only excrements of its ox's tenants on the runways. Where are the old times of bad roads, when the planes were the only option for marmers, doctors, postmen...

We find a way near to the majestic cone, in the direction of the expected north-west wind. But the wind blow to the back at the present. We are ready, excited and thinking how to drop the rope outside the fences, which are made from barbed wires. Finally the wind sleeves (made from toilet paper) turn round to desirable direction!

The plan was perfect. The rope falls down crossing the barbed fence at least ten times. In the end only Vlasta was successful and flew away. The very gently looking day appears to be quite wild.

Takový mazec jsem ve vzduchu ještě nezažil! Stoupáky, slabé u země, se zpravidla mění na 5-6kové cloumáky. To by ani nevadilo, kdyby nebyly prokládány rozsáhlými 6-7 klesáky. A tak lítám jako jojo nahoru a dolů, fackován zleva, zprava, frontál, twist, á dva tři, šou dva tři. Svižně takto míjím přehradu na Orange a z dálky už se začínají rýsovat hory Lesota.

Hurá, sen se naplňuje! Jenže v tom mi kamarádi vysílačkou volají, že se na zemi poněkud rozdunělo a že nárazy jsou, ehm, poněkud bestiální. Rozhoduji se porušit pravidlo IFR (I Follow the Road) a snažím se obletět hory u Burgersbergu. Zakrátko jsem sílícím větrem stejně natlačen k horám a nastává jojo druhého druhu: Na speedu a turbulencích dolů, ve stoupáku a v turbulencích na původní místo. Mezitím Víťa opět stahuje předpověď, která slibovala podvečerní uklidnění a dokonce slabý jih od hor. Do rádia mi hlásí, že předpověď trvá na svém, že se to v půl šesté opravdu otočí. Severozápadní vítr ovšem taky trvá na svém a tak pracně vybojovanou pozici nad sedlem vzdávám a raději vyhnívám, než riskovat dýzu v sedle s vysokým napěním a stromy (stromy!!! ve volné krajině je vidím poprvé po dvou týdnech). Teď už stačí jen nenacouvat do termitiště, jimiž je poseta záchranná pastvina. Jsou tvrdá jako betom a často i metr vysoká. Teprve po dosednutí si uvědomuji, jak mě bolí ruce. It was toil as newer before.

We plan next steps on the map in the evening and criticise the wearther forecast. Exactly at the time of our criticism, the wind gently raise the map up from the south. Only with one hour late. Few minutes later the trees rustle and in another while they incline in north direction. This is a breath of the Indian Ocean!

Hurricane tries to push our car out of the way, but bigger problem is to built a tent in this weather. We are lucky, because we find a shelter near to the desolate railway line. In the morning we wake up to an incredibly calm sunny day.
