What about to fly over parched pans, salt lakes, look into the desert of Namibia, and to the mountains of Lesotho, fly along the Orange River, glow at the edge of the Kalahari desert and chase the wild winds ... These desires joined several pilots, who are just trying to fly across South Africa from the Atlantic to the Indian ocean. (---corrected machine translation---)

Part 6 - waste land and pans

Even in the evening we found the first droughty lake suitable for winching. Crazy wind calmed down in the meantime, showers and thunderstorms are only on the horizon and thats´s why Martin is not wasting his time and is preparing paraglide for beautiful sunset fly.

A few drops of rain, which fall on the ground sometimes, have elicited our new friends. This is the first of them, Martin called him Pepik. Finally, we have completely domesticated him thanks to Chinese cooked noodles and he has spent the whole night together drinking wine. By hat time nameless basin got its name Pepik´s Lake. And other and also bigger brothers came. However they didn't get any names. You know, the first is only one.

We know the rule about scorpins from Des: the bigger scorpion is safer. Dangerous are the little ones with small claws, because they use their toxical tail.

We are looking forward to getting into the air in the morning, Dutch have our coordinates. Instead of it the sky is cloudy and we got a message that this day is not suitable for flying. So we go deeper into the territory of "Condom", examine basins and alleged huge salt lakes. We spent here four beautiful days in the end, we overrided hundreds of kilometers and we could see closer the life of people living in this semi-desert area. Population density: two per square kilometer.

Day with the beautiul sky full of cumuluses - perfect for world's records. It has only one defect. Raw gusts of wind command us to keep our glides back into the the bag and we can look at the cumuluses only from the ground. We pass the night on one of the largest basins.

Finally, the next day we happily leave a large basin. It is not strictly salt. It looks earthen from the nearby, but sandy from a long-distance view. We are without a GSM signal and that's why without weather forecast. We are flying to bet on the right wind. The bett is pretty and we arrive back to Pepik. We want to fly to De Aar the next day. Again we are flying only on very weak cloudless termic.

There is a weak signal in Pepik's Lake and on the basis of weather forecast we have happy illusion of positive conditions. In the calm morning we are successful in getting Víťa and later Martin into the air. On the dangerous 25th kilometers long lap of the journey without roads Martin's transmitter failed and they boys aren't very hight at the time. Hmm, well... If Martin lands somewhere wrong, we will never find him - we will not know where to look. In the meantime - contrary to weather forecast - the wind is getting brutal. Before Vlasta drove around this sector on really bad roads, the guys were 50 km away. Water boils inside the car radiator. Nothing doing, we have to use our water for cooling our car from outside and the remaining drinking water put inside the car radiator.

And than, Vlasta is trying to catch up the boys in the air on dusty roads at speeds of 100 km per hour.

Yipee, Martin was able to say half a sentence to the radio. He is on the trail! And later he happily lands, but flying backward.

Víťa has a good connection, but our distance is still increasing. It is not possible to drive as fast as he fly!

Instead of cumuloses appear Lenticulars in the sky. Now it is difficult to advice. Is it better to land as soon as possible or continue as long as possible? What a relief when Víťa reports to the radio that he dug a scrack and he is all right!

Now we are enjoying the restful windy day in De Aar and finally we have time to wtire few lines for you.

Merry Christmas!

Ahoj kamarádi, díky za vaše ohlasy. Dnes jsme ještě malinko popoletěli, nachytali trochu slunka, potěšili oko okolní krajinou a vyrážíme do Johanesburgu na megapřelet. A v letadle hned nadatlujem další etapy do mobila, aby ty informace v českém mrazu nevystydly :)
